Well, more accurately they couldn’t explain why he had one. Snark aside, the puppet was part of a 1931 show by the Yale Puppeteers, who came to perform at the Teatro Torito in Los Angeles. Einstein caught a performance and had a picture taken with it by his friend Harry Burnett. (He also teased that the puppet needed to be more fat and stuffed paper up the puppet’s front shirt to achieve the desired effect.)
